Jeev slips as rain halts play at World Golf Championship

March 24th, 2008

Doral (US), March 23 (IANS) Jeev Milkha Singh created a lot of opportunities but was not able to capitalise on them as he was only one-under through 12 holes, when play was halted in the third round of the World Golf Championships-CA Championship Saturday afternoon. Jeev, who started the day at six-under was seven-under but had slipped on the provisional leaderboard from overnight fourth to 12th on a day when the Blue Monster course was benign and conducive to scoring.
Indo-Swede Daniel Chopra, after being seven-under through 10 holes, dropped to three-under after 12 and was five-under for the tournament in tied 19th.
S.S.P. Chowrasia, playing his first event in US was three-under through 15 and even par for the tournament and moved from 62nd to 54th place.
The lead was held Geoff Ogilvy who was two-under through 12 to be 14-under, while Adam Scott, four-under through 12 was 13-under. Interestingly the only player in top 18 not under par was World No. 1 Tiger Woods, who was even through 12 holes and tied for third.
Jeev started superbly with a birdie on first and a second one on fifth at which point he was eight-under and lying fifth. On the sixth and seventh, Jeev reached the greens in regulation and gave himself good chances, but the putts did not drop.
On the par-5 eighth, the second easiest hole of the day, he missed the fairway as did many other top stars including the leaders, and then his second shot trickled into the water. He dropped a bogey there.
Chopra was on fire at seven-under for first 10 holes but thereafter fell into problems. He bogeyed the 11th and then triple bogeyed the 12th to fall to three-under for the day and five-under for tournament. He still had six holes to play.

Tupper: Illinois teams not invited to NCAA tournament

March 17th, 2008

INDIANAPOLIS — Bruce Weber reached into the Lou Henson clothing vault Sunday and pulled out a sport jacket that looked like it was stolen from the coat room at an Orange Bowl cocktail party.
The term “fresh squeezed” came to mind when Weber strolled to the Illini bench prior to the start of Sunday’s championship game of the Big Ten Tournament.
Weber has collected a half-dozen or more orange sport coats since becoming head coach at the University of Orange and Blue. And when Ryan Baker, the host of his TV show, recently presented him with an orange necktie as a gift, Weber announced that his inventory of school-color neckwear had now reached 63.
“I’m going to have to get a new tie rack,” he said. “The old one only holds 62.”
Illinois tried to complete a fantasy weekend run Sunday, going for its fourth victory in four days. Alas, Wisconsin is too good, too polished and too savvy to be suckered into any sloppy play now. The Badgers made half of their 18 3-point shots and easily turned back the Illini, 61-48.
At least disgruntled Illinois State fans won’t be storming Champaign to hunt down anyone wearing orange. Blame for the Redbirds not being invited to the NCAA tournament will be placed somewhere, but it’s not Illinois’ fault.

SEC MEN’S BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT Late starter : Emotional Hunter …

March 14th, 2008

Arkansas senior Vincent Hunter crested his waning basketball career with his first and final Senior Night on Saturday.
He played basketball throughout his high school career, including his senior season, but still never had a Senior Night, he said.
The 23-year-old, fifth-year forward for the Razorbacks was - at the time - J. A. Fair High School’s scoring and rebounding machine, when he led his Little Rock school to the 4 A state tournament finals in 2003.
Before reaching the finals, things were going well. He was averaging a double-double in points and rebounds. Colleges, including the University of Arkansas, were showing recruiting interest.
But then news came that J. A. Fair High would have to forfeit its last five games of the season before the state tournament.
As a result, Hunter never got the chance to stand in the pre-game spotlight and be saluted for his seniority on the hardwood - until Saturday in the Hogs’ final regular season game against Auburn.
His first Senior Day wasn’t the only milestone for Hunter. He also got his third consecutive start of the season, and provided an offensive spark early on, hitting a wideopen 3-pointer with 18: 34 remaining in the first half.
