BG names Kasun coach

Kasun also coaches the girls volleyball program at BG.
The Lady Marauders finished 10-6 in the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference this season (13-7 overall), and split with or defeated three Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association state-ranked teams at tournaments this past season.
‘‘Our girls volleyball program has made very good progress over the past three years,’’ Bishop Guilfoyle athletic director Richard Hatch said. ‘‘We’re hoping for the same progress with our boys program.’’
Kasun also coached the Cambria Heights girls volleyball program to the PIAA Class AAA Final Four in 1986.

New York crane collapse kills four

March 16th, 2008

A 19-storey crane alongside a New York skyscraper has toppled like a tree, crashing into apartment buildings, killing four people and setting off a scramble for survivors.
The crane split into pieces as it fell on top of a four-storey townhouse and demolished parts of three other buildings. One man was pulled from the townhouse three-and-a-half hours after the building was crushed.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg said at least four people, all of them believed to be construction workers, had died and at least 10 people had been injured in one of the city’s worst construction accidents in recent memory.
The collapse happened on Manhattan’s East Side. Cars were overturned and crushed.
A huge dust cloud rose over the neighbourhood. Rubble was piled several storeys high.
“It’s a horrible situation, very gory. There’s blood in the street,” said Lieutenant Governor David Paterson.
An intensive rescue operation was under way to find anyone possibly trapped in the rubble on 51st Street near 2nd Avenue.
Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta said the rescue was “a painstaking hand operation, as we try to remove the rubble so we don’t cause further collapse or injure anyone who may still be in that building.”

South Park: Tonsil Trouble (season premiere)

March 13th, 2008

(S12E01) After a routine tonsillectomy goes horribly wrong, Cartman comes face to face with his own mortality.
Season Twelve is out of the gate pretty strong. Unfortunately, it seemed to lose momentum towards the end.
Matt and Trey tackle the issue of AIDS…again (they have done so before, such as in the episode mocking Jared from the Subway commercials). They tend to present AIDS as a shock-value joke, but this time their take is slightly different.
Rather than the disease itself, the creators analyze the media treatment of AIDS. The disease has fallen out of favor and is not really in popular culture anymore. Perhaps it’s because we better understand and can control the disease, or perhaps it’s just an old hat. In either case, it’s really not in the spotlight anymore.
I love the psychedelic style of the new intro. The music is the same, but I laughed at the silly angles in which the kids suddenly appeared to say their lines.
The “f” bomb is dropped a few times in this episode. “F**k your ice cream!” “F**k you, Jimmy Buffett!” This is nothing new for the series, but it was still very noticeable.
Butters kissing Cartman was a classic moment, as was Kyle’s reaction to learning that Eric was HIV positive. What was up with the cap Cartman wore after he was diagnosed? There was a “P” on it. Was that a baseball reference? I don’t think so, otherwise he wouldn’t have been wearing a Rockies cap.

Curtain goes up on Tina's new venture

March 11th, 2008

A Midlands woman pulled herself together after being made redundant - to launch a curtain shop.
Tina Leese, from Warwickshire, had been making curtains for family and friends for years before losing her job, and has now opened her own unit at Hatton Shopping Village, near Warwick.
Following a suggestion from her husband Dale to advertise her handmade curtain service, the cottage industry took off very successfully.
Tina has since received commissions to curtain village halls, schools, hotels, guest-houses and for complete house makeovers - including supplying curtains and soft furnishings for 15 rooms in a listed rectory in Castle Bromwich.
Mrs Leese said the opening of Curtain Workshop would provide her with much-needed work space and a showroom for her designs, which include vertical, wooden and Venetian blinds, door-stops, footstools, table linen, cushions and chair covers, plus a range of luxury fabrics, curtain poles and tracks.
She also offers a free measuring and home consultation service and makes curtains from customer’s chosen fabric.
She said: “I can’t believe that what started as a hobby has ended up with me opening my own shop at Hatton Shopping Village.
“I love every aspect of the job, from the design and creation to finally seeing the whole concept in situ. It’s my dream to come to Hatton and I’ve been waiting for a unit to become available for some time.
