Ultrarich Wash Down Recession with 35K Champagne

April 15th, 2008

Discovered a new website that you may be interested in. It is called Citybitz. It features jewelr [more]
[from jenchungsboobs] City Council Could Approve 125th Street Rezoning Tomorrow | The New York Observer
The Federal Reserve Board may be sending distress signals about a “prolonged and severe economic downturn,” but ultrarich individuals like hedge fund manager Lee Tachman aren’t sweating it; the 38-year-old Tachman just spent $50,000 on a four day vacation to Miami with three of his bros. According to a ‘Happy Monday’ article in the Times, Tachman’s crew rolled with a “private jet, helicopter, Hummer limousine, Ferraris and Lamborghinis; stayed in V.I.P. rooms at Casa Casuarina, the South Beach hotel that was formerly Gianni Versace’s mansion; and played ‘extreme adventure paintball’ with former agents of the DEA.”
That trip was organized by In the Know Experiences, a vacation-planning company for the affluent whose website promises that “the velvet ropes will fly open, the champagne will keep flowing, and the enjoyment will be everlasting.” Indeed, the Times hears from many in the luxury good business who say that while the merely rich have been tightening the belts a bit, ultrarich consumption continues unabated. The co-owner of the newish Meatpacking District club 1OAK says his guests are still demanding the club’s “Nebuchadnezzar;” a 15 liter bottle of Champagne that costs up to $35,000.
Not feeling bilious enough yet? Try this: Since last January three New Yorkers have bought yachts ranging from $8 million to $35 million. And 71 Manhattan apartments have been sold for over $10 million this year, compared with 17 apartments in that price range during all of 2007. In fact, just days before the collapse of Bear Stearns, the bank’s chairman, James E. Cayne, paid $25 million for a condo at the Plaza Hotel. Anyway, don’t forget your taxes are due tomorrow!

LuPone's Rip-Roaring Rose Anchors Best `Gypsy' Yet: John Simon

April 13th, 2008

March 28 (Bloomberg) — No matter how many times you've seen “Gypsy,'' you arguably haven't experienced it as fully as you may now on Broadway at the St. James Theatre. I think I have caught them all, starting with the legendary Ethel Merman in the premiere, but it is this one that has definitive written all over it.
In Patti LuPone's Mama Rose, Boyd Gaines's Herbie and Laura Benanti's Louise, the musical has that radiant nucleus around which everything else coalesces into a parade of delights. This is the “nec plus ultra'' of “Gypsy'' productions, than which I can imagine none greater.
You surely know this revered musical tells the fact-based tale of Rose, the stage mother from hell, and daughters June and Louise, whom she prodded and propelled into stardom as June Havoc and Gypsy Rose Lee.
Had Rose settled for her Seattle existence as a provincial, oft-divorced mother of two more or less stage-struck kids — June more, Louise less — the latter's memoirs could not have underlain the work of another great threesome: writer Arthur Laurents, lyricist Stephen Sondheim and composer Jule Styne.
But wait, make that a foursome: the late Jerome Robbins's choreography, reproduced by Bonnie Walker, continues to exert its death-defying seduction. The two major dance numbers — the “All I Need Is the Girl'' duet for the winsome Benanti and the dynamic Tony Yazbeck, and the furibund final solo, “Rose's Turn,'' for the breathtaking and show-stopping LuPone — are fusions of the balletic and dramatic at their story-telling best.
This production began last summer at the semi-staged Encores! Series at New York's City Center and reaches fully staged fruition here, with almost all participants returning, along with Patrick Vaccariello conducting the expert 25-piece orchestra.
Some problems do arise. At City Center, the orchestra had to be onstage, given what was essentially a concert performance. On Broadway, however, the orchestra should be in the pit, which is what the writing predicates and the public prefers. Yet it is again onstage, mostly hidden by a scrim. Also, the concert's toy lamb and lapdog should have been upped into the desiderated bona fide trained animals for Broadway.

In SW Fla., Crist talks up health plan

April 11th, 2008

Gov. Charlie Crist made a Southwest Florida swing Thursday to drum up support for his health insurance plan, which he hopes will allow the state’s 3.8 million uninsured residents to buy coverage.
The Senate approved the plan Thursday but Crist said he’s concerned the House may not do the same. The House Policy and Budget Council is scheduled to hear a similar bill next week.
Crist wants to use the state’s bargaining clout to negotiate low-cost plans with insurers. The governor said policies could cost as little as $100 a month.
They will not be subsidized by the state.
“It doesn’t cost taxpayers a dime,” he said.
Crist visited The News-Press editorial board, then drove to Lee Memorial Hospital, which houses the region’s trauma center and an emergency room that sees as many as 200 patients a day, many of whom are uninsured.
The issue is critical for Southwest Florida, which trails only Miami-Dade in rate of uninsured residents. The latest state study, completed in 2004, shows 24 percent uninsured here.
Lee Memorial President Jim Nathan said he expects the figure has hit 30 percent, although there hasn’t been a study to verify that.
Nathan said he’s seen similar proposals elsewhere and said people often don’t buy even lower-priced plans.
“If they’re in that kind of strained income, they don’t buy anything,” he said. “Still I think we should endorse this.”
Nathan said he doubted the plan would include hospitalization at those low premiums, but he hoped they might help residents pay for doctors’ visits and medications and keep them from needing the hospital.
At Thursday’s hospital board meeting, members agreed and unanimously endorsed the proposal.
Lee Memorial spent $60 million last year on caring for the uninsured. That includes charity cases - people with low enough income to pay nothing - as well as patients who are asked to pay at least part of their care.

Bucs open spring football drills today

March 29th, 2008

Charleston Southern head football coach Jay Mills seems optimistic about his 2008 Buccaneers being one of the better teams in school history as his squad begins spring football drills today.
The Buccaneers managed only four wins last season after posting 16 wins in the previous two seasons. It was only two seasons ago when CSU won a school-record nine games. Mills sees the same type of potential in his 2008 squad. Potential being the operative word.
“Potential is a good, positive word,” said Mills. “We have some good football players returning, some quality additions and what I believe will be excellent leadership. As much as we like the word potential, it’s really all about productivity. That’s a more important word, and that’s where the intangibles lie. We basically have five and a half months to turn potential into productivity.”
This spring practice will be all about change, especially on the defensive side of the ball. CSU will have four new defensive coaches, including a new coordinator as former Clemson assistant Thielen Smith takes over this spring.
Gone from the defense are linebackers Jada Ross and Jonna Lee, defensive end Dennis Justiniani and four-year starting safety C.J. Hirschman.
The return of senior Josh Mitchell will stabilize things at linebacker. Mitchell was a three-year starter before missing all of last season with an injury. Last year’s starting fullback/tight end Ryan Ard is moving over to defensive end.
“We have some mid-year transfers in that will immediately help our depth defensively,” said Mills. “We feel good about our linebackers and our depth, and I think our secondary has a chance to be pretty good.
Offensively, junior Eli Byrd will return at quarterback but will likely miss most of the spring as he recovers from minor surgery. Redshirt freshman Gabe Gilmour and junior college transfer A.J. Toscano will see most of the spring snaps in a battle for the No. 2 spot.

Every School Every Thursday — Waukee

March 22nd, 2008

There will be no school for spring break March 15-24.
The district’s fourth term will begin March 25.
The Waukee school district’s Parent Teacher Organization is looking for volunteers to fill various leadership positions. The PTO will hold a public vote on the slate of positions for the 2008-09 school year from 7 to 8 p.m. April 22 at the Waukee Public Library, 950 Warrior Lane. The deadline to apply for a position is 7 p.m. April 21. The following positions will be filled on the district PTO board: vice presidents for each of Waukee’s eight schools, secretary, treasurer and membership chairperson. In addition, each elementary school PTO will be seeking parent volunteers to form committees at the school-level, including fundraising, membership, activities, book fair, fine arts and conference meals. Parents interested in these positions should call Dee Dee Lounsbury at 987-1022 for more information.
Second-graders had their Fine Arts Night on March 4. They sang songs from “Seussical the Musical.”
Eason students are listening to the music of composer Antonio Vivaldi during the month of March. Every Wednesday morning during announcements students’ ears are treated to excerpts from his most famous work, “The Four Seasons.” These songs are quite familiar to the students already because they are often featured in many television commercials. Vivaldi had a great imagination and was able to capture the everyday sounds of the seasons in each of the movements. Buzzing flies, barking dogs, and the powerful sounds of a thunderstorm are all represented by the sounds of the string instruments.
The Eason art room has been a very busy place. Second-graders have been making papier mache masks in the form of animals, people, or combinations of the two. Fourth-graders are working on pastel portraits of animals, humans, or a combination. First- and third-graders are making clay pots. First-graders are learning how to make pinch pots and third-graders are trying their hands at coil pots. Kindergartners are also working with clay to make animals with four legs, and our fifth-graders are making clay relief tiles.

NC-17-rated 'Lust' brings honour for Lee, Schamus from theatre owners

March 20th, 2008

LAS VEGAS — Ang Lee opened up a new world of tolerance and compassion for gay cowboys with “Brokeback Mountain.” For his next act, the filmmaker helped take the pornography sting out of Hollywood’s NC-17 rating, which is reserved for explicit adult-themed material.
Lee and frequent producing and screenwriting partner James Schamus were honoured with a freedom of expression award Tuesday at ShoWest, an annual convention of theatre owners, for their collaborations, which include last year’s sexually charged thriller “Lust, Caution.”
Though the $4.6-million domestic haul for “Lust, Caution” was small compared to the $83-million box-office return for “Brokeback Mountain,” Lee and Schamus’s latest production went a long way to legitimizing the NC-17 rating.
Set during the Second World War era, “Lust, Caution” centres on a young Chinese woman (Tang Wei) who seduces a collaborator (Tony Leung) with the Japanese so she and her accomplices can plot his execution. The film features several love scenes between the two.
“That’s the best part of acting. I’ve been directing actors for a long time. How many times do you see actors like that, even just a second or something?” Lee, 53, said in an interview alongside Schamus.
“You see the most private performances. The most brave and private,” said Lee, who won the best-director Academy Award for “Brokeback Mountain.”
“I think those scenes are pivotal. They anchor the movie, so it would be a shame if we don’t see it.”
Only a handful of movies have gone out with the NC-17 rating, which replaced the old X rating in the early 1990s to offer a category that did not carry the connotation of smut for explicit movies.
The most notable NC-17 release before “Lust, Caution” was 1995’s “Showgirls,” a huge critical and commercial flop. Other NC-17 releases such as “A Dirty Shame” or “The Dreamers” played to small cult crowds or art-house audiences.
