Huntington to host gay pride parade on Sunday

June 8th, 2008

Long Island’s gay and lesbian community will be out in force today in Huntington for the 18th annual Long Island Pride Parade.
Festivities begin at noon, when parade-goers and participants gather for a rally at the municipal parking lot on Gerard Street opposite the Huntington Post Office.
The parade steps off an hour later from there and will make its way down Main Street, turning left onto Prime Avenue into Heckscher Park.
“It’s going to be a wonderful, exciting day,” said Sandy Faison, executive director of the parade. “The Town of Huntington is fantastic to us. Every year, it gets better and better for us.”
Suffolk police said Main Street (Route 25A) from West Neck Road to Park Avenue and New York Avenue (Route 110) from High to Gerard streets will be closed from 12:45 p.m. to about 2:45 p.m.
Faison said more than 42 groups representing motorcycle clubs, community organizations, performance artists, musicians and others as well as four floats will travel along Main Street.
“It’s a celebration of who we are,” Faison said. “It’s a chance to walk down Main Street with our heads held high with no one screaming at us. It’s a wonderful day of pride.”
Faison said there will be three grand marshals: Helen Radziewicz, a Babylon bar owner; and two Long Island outreach groups, Pride for Youth and Thursday’s Child.
“I really want to thank everyone who has made this event possible,” Faison said, “from Supervisor Frank Petrone, his board, my board. It’s a group effort.”
At the parade’s end at Heckscher Park, revelers can enjoy a free festival featuring live entertainment, food, community information booths and vendors. For children, there will be clowns, face painting, balloon animals and a bounce house.

SEC announces refund policy

March 28th, 2008

ATLANTA (AP) — The Southeastern Conference will issue refunds to fans who bought tickets through authorized locations for games in the March 14-16 SEC basketball tournament that were affected by the tornado that hit the Georgia Dome.
Games from sessions 4, 5 and 6 were moved to Alexander Memorial Coliseum on the Georgia Tech campus after the March 14 tornado damaged the Georgia Dome.
Tickets were not honored at the smaller Alexander Memorial Coliseum.
Admission was listed to a limited number of passes given to each team for the final three sessions.
Fans can receive a refund based on the following conditions:
– The ticket was purchased through the SEC office, the Georgia Dome, or one of the 12 SEC schools.
– The original ticket holder mails the tickets to the place where they were purchased, postmarked by April 18. Session 4 tickets could be torn, since only the last game of the session was postponed by the storm.
Only the original ticket holder may receive the refund.
Refunds will be issued by the same method they were purchased. The maximum refund is $125, or $45 for each of the three sessions.
Details of the refund policy, and addresses for the SEC and each of the 12 schools, can be found on the Internet at www.SECsports.com.

Univision Radio to Debut The Enrique and Joe Show on Miami’s La …

March 13th, 2008

MIAMI–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Univision Radio, a division of Univision Communications Inc., and the leading Spanish-language radio broadcaster in the United States, today announced their wildly popular duo Enrique Santos and Joe Ferrero will debut “ The Enrique and Joe Show ” in Miami with syndication in Fresno. The duo will begin airing daily from an all-new state-of-the-art studio on their new home, La Kalle 98.3 FM, on Thursday, March 13, from 6:00 -11:00 a.m. ET. In Fresno, the show will air on La Kalle 107.9 FM from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. PT.
“ We are all very excited to formally introduce Enrique Santos and Joe Ferrero as part of the Univision Radio family in Miami and Fresno, ” said Gary Stone, Univision Radio ’ s president and COO. “ Their morning show has been broadcasting in New York on La Kalle 105.9 FM for the past year with much enjoyed success. And their Miami show will be a reflection of what they ’ ve always done so well, which is to entertain and move the community they serve. ”
The format of the show will be what the community expects to hear from the edgy duo, which gained international notoriety and became known as the “ Masters of Prank Calls ” for their calls to presidents Hugo Chavez, Nestor Kirchner, and most famously, Cuban Dictator Fidel Castro. Santos questioned Castro on the crisis in Cuba and called him an “ assassin ” on the air. A never-before-heard Castro lost control and cursed violently. This “ mother of all pranks ” resulted in coverage on CNN, The New York Times, The Miami Herald, BBC, and NBC ’ s “ The Rick Sanchez Show, ” among other local, national and international media.
