JabbaWockeeZ FTW!

March 28th, 2008

The JabbaWockeez are now Randy Jackson Presents: America’s Best Dance Crew (or as we’ll refer to it: RJPABDC) winners. After a week of online voting by me, and other fans, the season finale of RJPABDC saw JabbaWockeez beat out Status Quo for the first ever title of best dance crew.
Prior to the finale, the official press release for the show stated that the RJPABDC website had currently received 28 million votes and over 9 million votes in the first twenty-four hours.
The JabbaWockeez had initially entered the RJPABDC competition with seven members but had recently lost one of their own, Gary Kendall. Kendall lost his battle with pneumonia and meningitis and died on Decemeber 14th, 2007.
Despite this depressing hurdle, the JabbaWockeez persevered and were crowned victorious last night.
GO JABBA! We love you.

What2Watch: Celebrity Apprentice Brought A Trace More Interest

March 28th, 2008

For better or worse, The Apprentice franchise was revitalized by the celebrity edition, which ends tonight. It first seemed as if the new season was little more than a face-saving way for Donald Trump to retire on his own terms, but it’s apparently coming back for next winter. And to be fair, it’s been a good deal more entertaining than the last two civilian seasons.
Tonight (NBC, 9 PM), it’s “villain” Piers Morgan against All-American Trace Adkins in the finale, a charity auction and concert. The weakness in the celebrity format is that there wasn’t much in the way of business acumen displayed; it was mostly just a test each week of which team could leverage its various high-profile contacts more effectively. Morgan deserves credit for being the best at stressing that angle, but I’d be very surprised if Trump picked him to win since Trace is the guy America loves. If there’s one thing Trump won’t put up with, it’s being the second most abrasive person on his own show.
NCAA Basketball (CBS, 7 PM): Why, my bracket is doing just peachy, thanks for asking. The early games are Xavier/West Virginia and Washington State/North Carolina, and the late games are Tennessee/Louisville and UCLA/Western Kentucky.
Miss/Guided (ABC, 8 PM and 8:30 PM): The early episodes of this series sure did reflect executive producer Todd Holland’s past with Malcolm in the Middle: it has the same sort of visual sensibility. In tonight’s leadoff half hour, Becky vandalizes Bruce’s office in an attempt to seem cool; at 8:30, Becky is roped into organizing an anniversary party for an unpopular teacher.
Smallville (CW, 8 PM): Kara teaches Clark to fly in order that he might battle Brainiac, but the villain maintains control anyway. Hey, you don’t get a name like Brainiac by letting some nighttime soap kids get the better of you.

Web & Club Dance Phenomena Reinvented on America's Best Dance Crew …

March 21st, 2008

This is a fun week on MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew for anyone who’s tried to learn a dance popularized by the internet or in clubs. Competing teams were assigned to reinterpret a recent web or club phenomena, with an added challenge thrown in. Most crews, while creatively reinventing popular moves, didn’t come through as well on their challenges.
“Live in Color,” the Miami group best known for its lightening speed pelvic contractions, which judge Lil’ Mama calls “booty pops,” was given DJ Unk’s “2 Step,” a Stepping dance whose footwork the team captain noted was easy; the difficulty lay in putting character to those steps. They did the basic moves with all of their regular fast fun flair, and added their own spin with a series of those “booty pops,” isolations with attitude, and a short ballet section by one couple. I appreciated that with last section that they tried something different, but unfortunately the woman seemed to have a little ballet less training than the man and their spins were not in sync and looked a bit sloppy. Their challenge was to exchange clothing at some point during the routine. This they did by having one man rip off his shirt and throw it to the dancer beside him, who quickly slid his arms through the sleeves, a daunting task when keeping the beat to such fast music. But, as with most teams, they performed the challenge only once and it wasn’t tremendously creative. I liked better some of the tricks they were trying in practice sessions, particularly where one woman whipped her scarf over another’s head and kind of roped her in with it.
The second team, the all-male JabbaWockeeZ performed to Dem Franchize Boyz’s “Lean Wit it, Rock Wit It,” another hit dance with easy moves geared toward general club dancers. Their soft, quiet movement with intricate isolations made for a wholly different dance, even while many steps were the same. They really owned it, and beautifully so. One man did a “flair” floor spin using his hands to whip his body around repeatedly, and in the midst, amazingly, caught a red handkerchief thrown at him. Their challenge was to create the illusion of flying, which, after initial confusion on receiving the task, they ended up executing brilliantly. At the end, four men kneeled, with two men behind them, one only his head and arms peeking out behind the first man in the row, the other only his legs visible from the end, so that the two back men appeared to be one flying Superman. With the team’s poetry, and the soft undulating movement of the former’s arms and the latter’s legs, it also evoked a fish or bird.

The Writers Guild of America strike was a tough 100 days, both for the writers and for viewers. But who’s to say we couldn’t live another minute without a new episode of the broadcast sitcom “Two and a Half Men”? On the other hand, viewers of the best shows on cable were sweating over whether those shows would be back. With the return of “The Riches” on Tuesday nights, cable television fans can breathe a little easier.
The show’s two British imports, Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver, return as Wayne and Dahlia Malloy, who have been impersonating Doug and Cherien Rich, a wealthy couple who died on the way to their new suburban tract mansion in a Southern master-planned community called Eden Falls. Wayne and Dahlia, along with their three children —- Cael, Di Di and Sam —- are “travellers,” a group of itinerant con artists who discover that life in Eden Falls living with the “buffers,” or non-travellers, has some perks: a nice house, nice cars and friends at school. If only the Riches’ friends weren’t trying to find out what happened to the couple, and the Malloys’ family members weren’t blackmailing them to get their share of the prize.
