Glen Cove native found slain in Chelsea apartment

June 2nd, 2008

Glen Cove native Margaux Powers moved to Manhattan to pursue a career in finance, but police said her life and those ambitions were extinguished this weekend by the man who slashed her throat.
The 26-year-old’s body was found around 6 p.m. Saturday in the bathtub of the Chelsea apartment that police said she shared with her boyfriend, Jonathan Smith, 34.
Police found an unsigned apology note in the apartment and said they suspect Smith killed Powers before leaping to his death several hours later from another lower Manhattan building at 55 Exchange Place in the financial district.
Police said it was unclear how long Powers had been dead before she was found.
Family and friends offered few details about Smith except that he had grown up in nearby Glen Head, had known the Powers family for years and had recently been laid off from the Manhattan restaurant where he’d worked as a chef.
The victim’s father, Michael S. Powers, declined to speak to reporters at his Poppy Lane home in Glen Cove, but released a written statement saying the family is “completely devastated” by her loss.
“We were looking forward to watching her life continue to blossom,” wrote Powers, the managing director of Lazard Asset Management in Manhattan. “But her future has been tragically cut short and we are overcome with grief.”
Smith’s stepmother, Mary Smith, was reached by phone at her Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. home where she lives with Smith’s father, Baldwin. Mary Smith declined to discuss details of her stepson’s yearlong relationship with Powers. “I think both families need time to just heal and be together,” she said.
Family members said Margaux Powers and her father were very close, regularly taking trips together - the two attended the 2007 French Open and recently returned from a vacation to China.

Barnes to Arkansas fans: Don't mess with Texas

Rick Barnes has a message for fans in Arkansas: Treat his visiting Longhorns well this weekend — or else.
Second-seeded Texas faces 15th-seeded Austin Peay on Friday afternoon in Little Rock — the capital of a state with a storied hatred for all things burnt orange.
“Obviously, and honestly, our guys don’t know the rivalry that existed between Texas and Arkansas,” Barnes said Monday. “We’re scheduled to come play Arkansas next year (in Fayetteville), and if the fans don’t treat us well, we’re not going to come. You can put that out there. I’m serious. We’ve got enough money here we can buy our way out of it. So, they’d better be good to us.”
After the NCAA tournament brackets were announced Sunday, the Texas coach was already bracing for a rude welcome in Little Rock, noting that underdogs are almost always crowd favorites.
But the Texas-Arkansas feud has far deeper roots, back to the old Southwest Conference days.
Then, in 1995, when Arkansas came to play NCAA first- and second-round games in Austin, the Erwin Center crowd loudly embraced underdogs Texas Southern and Syracuse — and the Razorbacks barely survived, winning two games here by a total of three points.
Afterward, Arkansas athletic director Frank Broyles sent a complaint to the NCAA about the fans’ treatment in Austin, and declared, “I hope we never play in Austin again. … I would want our team to be sent anywhere but Austin.”
This week, the Longhorns might wish they were anywhere but Arkansas.
