Izzy's exile follows pattern

May 19th, 2008

In the aftermath of Thursday’s grotesque 11-5 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates, Jason Isringhausen concluded a 10-minute media back-and-forth by insisting to a straggler, "It’s not like I want to go hide somewhere."
But truth be told, that’s exactly what the Cardinals did Friday.
Citing a week-old laceration on Isringhausen’s pitching hand, the Cardinals put their deposed closer and their all-time saves leader on the 15-day disabled list.
Cardinals medical supervisor Dr. George Paletta examined Isringhausen on Friday morning and, according to the club, found nothing alarming among the body parts repaired during Izzy’s eight career surgeries.
The arthritic left hip checked out, according to general manager John Mozeliak.
The right shoulder that cost Isringhausen much of the 2003 season remains playable.
The club instead cited a self-inflicted wound as reason to send Isringhausen home this weekend and to Florida on Monday for a recovery that could take as long as six weeks, Mozeliak estimated.
Isringhausen did not show at Busch Stadium on Friday or Saturday. He did not return phone messages seeking his interpretation of what’s going on.
The Cardinals are hiding Izzy, if not telling him to get lost. The hope is that the relative isolation of Jupiter, Fla., and proximity to close friend Chris Carpenter will calm his jangled nerves and allow his confidence to heal along with the skin on his right palm.
No doubt Friday’s diagnosis was an injury of convenience. The condition was not mentioned as Isringhausen made two scoreless appearances in nonsave situations. However, irritation and infection apparently became more pronounced after he allowed the Pirates a four-run eighth inning in Thursday’s loss.
The finding came down less than two weeks after the club shut down starting pitcher Mark Mulder with a "mild left shoulder strain" after a difficult rehab appearance in Memphis. Left unsaid was that Mulder had only one start remaining on a 30-day rehab assignment and appeared nowhere close to ready.
