Leggatt bound for the booth in US Open
June 12th, 2008
he best talking head in televised golf is Johnny Miller, who speaks so much truth the players often hate him for it.
Nick Faldo is building a promising career, too, although his dry wit likely escapes some of his audience.
Miller won two majors while Faldo earned six, so their clubs did a lot of talking before they did for a paycheque. That said, here’s a nominee for a future star in the booth, albeit one with a much thinner resume: Ian Leggatt, the Cambridge, Ont., native still grinding out a living playing golf and taking his fourth kick at the U.S. Open can. His best result was a tie for 20th in 2003.
It says here Leggatt would make an outstanding television guy. He has one PGA Tour title in a career whose prime years mostly were spent fighting off – not always successfully – injuries and nasty allergies.
So his resume won’t compare to plenty of guys who eventually find their way to the booth.
But Leggatt is glib and knows the game, is not scared to offer an opinion and has an excellent sense of humour. Most importantly, he tends to call things by their right name. He wouldn’t be one of those worshipful guys making flimsy excuses for bad shots and speaking of "courage” for trying a difficult shot.
Leggatt is 42, finally healthy and just starting to make cuts regularly on the Nationwide Tour again. However much his career has left, some network, and not necessarily a Canadian network, should take a peek at him.
"It’s something I’d have to think about,” he said after practice at Torrey Pines, where he tees off in the penultimate group today at 5:31 p.m. EST. "I’ve been approached. Nothing official. But I didn’t think it was the right time.”
