Actually, I fail to understand why Ender’s Game attracts such adulation. Maybe because Ender gets such crap during his early schooling, it resonates with a lot of readers. Most of us have dealt with that. Other than that, I don’t think the story is all that big of a deal. The Valentine/Peter plot is completely ridiculous, although I suppose it seemed reasonable before the advent of the Internet.Speaker for the Dead was ok…I really liked Jane. However, I disliked a lot of the characters, especially Ender’s wife…which in turn made me dislike Ender for putting up with her.The Robinson Mars trilogy (Red, Green, Blue Mars) has the same problem with one of its characters that constantly deals with inner demons, blahblah, until you want to rip the pages from the book.By Children of the Mind, I had given up. Perhaps I’ll give the Ender’s Shadow series a try.

Ender’s Game hits a chord with a certain subset of individuals, namely those who group up with parents less intelligent than themselves. This subset is also highly selected in a poll about sci-fi, and in sci-fi fandom in general. Thus it rates highly.If you were lucky enough to grow up with parents that didn’t alienate you like the adults in Ender’s Game, thank them.

Ender’s Game is not a childrens’ book. Much like Starship Troopers, it’s commonly misunderstood for what it’s not. There is really nothing in this book that is for kids, aside from the “pew pew” of the insectoid wars, and much for grown ups like the pseudonym discussions and the repentance that lead to “speaker for the dead”. It is a very good reading on leadership too.
