ACE (Angiotensin Converting Enzyme) Inhibitors
March 31st, 2008
ACE Inhibitors are usually given to people with high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, or people with a high likelihood of developing coronary artery disease. They may also be given after a heart attack to prevent more complications and to people living with congestive heart failure. They help control your blood pressure to make it easier for the heart to pump. ACE inhibitors may also make you feel less tired and short of breath, reduce the time you spend in the hospital and help you live longer.
ACE inhibitors have been shown to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke and death in people with a history of coronary artery disease. They have also been shown to reduce the risk of heart attack and death in people with congestive heart failure. Since ACE inhibitors are used to control and prevent conditions of the heart, they are usually prescribed for the long term.
How does it work?
ACE inhibitors are vasodilators, which means they help widen (dilate) your blood vessels – making it easier for blood to flow. Better blood flow means your heart doesn’t have to work as hard.
How should I take it?
In order to prevent lightheadedness or dizziness, your doctor may start you with a small dose and increase it gradually. It is important that you keep your doctor appointments and have your blood pressure checked regularly in order to adjust your dose. Captopril is one ACE inhibitor that needs to be taken on an empty stomach. Other ACE inhibitors do not seem to be affected by food. Always talk to your doctor or pharmacist about how and when to take your medication.
What should I avoid while taking this medicine?
You should try to avoid drinking alcohol while taking ACE inhibitors.
What if I am taking other medicines?

Yeah, they change it every now and again and it can be difficult to get via Google, unless……you remember the reporter’s name: Raymond Cushing. He deigned to leave a comment to one of my posts. You can’t read it now, as the comment was made when the blog was at Blogger, and the whole blog was deleted by Google… it was words to the effect of “Glad you enjoy my work” or something like that.

Thank you very much for writing all that and explaining it. I can see how they could come up with seemingly contradictory results now since each study only focused on one aspect of two (or more) that influence the outcome. If you don’t mind, would you share your opinion on which condition (increasing TIMP-1 or increasing TACE) has a greater effect on tumor growth?

Oh my god, are you talking about this?http://news.minnesota.publicradio.org/features/2005/01/25_bensonl_oakdale/I never heard of it before, but it stuns me how this sort of thing can go on but you can still get a record for smoking a bit of weed. Things need to change man.

I agree that the anti-marijuana stuff is dumb, but going after the users of tobacco and alchohol is not cool. I understand if you don’t want to use them, but don’t start calling on a ban on a drug you don’t like just because other drugs are made illegal. It would be like cutting off your arms because you have no legs. Lets keep the eye on the prize. Government and other violence against anyone who respects others’ rights is deplorable, even if they are putting things in their body of which some people don’t approve.

Much better. Now since both studies amount to a pile of mostly incomprehensible words for me, perhaps you would care to explain what they mean and how one can seem to come to the opposite conclusion of the other.
